From Fashionista to Egg Maiden

Yesterday I took a job doing the egg candling at Elmwood Stock Farm in Georgetown. I wash the eggs then hold them up to a light to make sure there are no cracks. I put them in cartons. The cartons are stacked in a box which is then put in the walk-in. And over and over it goes.

I feel like I've won the lottery.

I've been wanting repetitive and meditative work for awhile now, craving time to just sit in my head. I'd only imagined physically demanding jobs like hammering nails and pulling weeds. It never occurred to me that I might find something so pleasant and satisfying as what I've found.

The farm is a stunning beauty and the barn where I work is open, allowing full view of the rolling fields. I can listen to my iPod...or not. Periodically a barn cat will come in and wind around my legs as I work. Andy prepares a delicious lunch for us everyday from the farm's bounty.

Contemplation and meditation plus lunch. What a life!

I meant to ask you if you'd gotten the job. I'm pleased to know you did.

In our next CSA share from Elmwood, the eggs will be even more special to me.

That sounds great! The mental image of you in an old barn, keenly inspecting eggs and surrounded by livestock is delightful.
